AAANNND…WE’RE BACK! PLAY TUESDAYS IS AT IT AGAIN

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

For those of you who’ve been following us on the regular, you know we’ve supported the guys behind PLAY TUESDAYS since Day 1. We were there when they started out in the small, cozy Attic(a), badgered them to bring it back when they went on hiatus, and followed them all the way to Mondial. Now, they’re up at it again right where they started — the brand spanking new-ly renovated, ATTICA! See you all TONIGHT for more of your favorite funk and old school rhythm and rhyme. Get your strong arms ready and steady, PLAY TUESDAYS is up at it AGAIN.

Communicate. Congregate. Collaborate.

We All Share A COMMON FUTURE

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

We know a good party when we see one. So when our boy, Tollo, hit us up about this UK-based DJ bout to throw it down at our local hangout, Play Tuesdays, we were more than happy to SHARE THE LOVE and SPREAD THE WORD.

DJ Mr. Nugget is a soulful house, funk and soul DJ and producer. His Jamaican-born parents surrounded him with reggae music, but he also grew up listening to soul, funk and disco. As a teen, he fell in love with hip hop and started scratching and MCing. The rest, as they say, is history. After having been in the industry here in the UK for over 10 years, and toured with UB40 (who are from his hometown of Birmingham) as well as with artists like Goldie, Shola Ama, and Ms. Dynamite, he moved to London and turned his focus to producing and DJing deep soulful house, as well as soul and funk music. His sets and his productions are all about positive vibes – hence, the name of his label, Hot Yoga – music for the mind, body and soul.

Having played at many media events for brands such as Armani, Diesel, Jasper Conran, Selfridges and world renowned clubs such as Ministry of Sound, MissMoneyPennys, 02 Arena and Cargo he most definitely knows how to handle the decks and is continuing to get recognition and bookings for many gigs worldwide.

To listen to his music, visit his soundcloud page on his website: www.djmrnugget.co.uk or check out these links:

CarnaManila: BRASILIPINAS 2010

Friday, February 12th, 2010

We may still be six years away from the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, but we can’t help but imagine how much fun its gonna be (with the mojitos, caipirinhas and all the drum beats) — that’s why to substitute, we’re heading over to support our boy, DJ Switchtrik and his crew, Miscellaneous (who’s playing with Brigada), just to prep ourselves…if ever we don’t make it to Rio.

DJ SWITCHTRIK

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Paolo Toledo, DJ/Musician/Writer/Advertiser/Entrepreneur/Toy Collector/Ninja/Emcee/Songwriter in the underground hiphop band, Miscellaneous, also under the Second Story Sounds team.

A collector of urban art in the form of vinyl toys particularly from Kidrobot, Toy2R and Mindstyle. I like the works of Huck Gee, Frank Kozik, MAD, Tristan Eaton, Tara McPherson and Tim Tsui (to name a few). A big fan of Fresh Manila, which never fails to hook me up with toys to feed my young (and hungry) addiction.

Learned to DJ at 19, been spinning both privately and publicly since. Has played in numerous bars and events from Makati to QC (i.e. Ponticello, Temple, Attica, Hierarchy, Mag:net, Coquina, Mint, Piedra, Warehouse 135, Mondial, Alchemy, Fiamma, etc), and even in other parts of the country (i.e. Discovery Shores Boracay for Attica’s A-List Parties).

With the influence Second Story Sounds, he was able to expand his DJing skills and music, and he learned a lot from the rest of the guys. Paolo just kept on watching other DJs and just jamming at home or at the studio, until he was able to invest in more equipment and was able to accept more gigs in bigger events and clubs. Until now, he just does this all for the learning and the fun and of course the music. He is just as big a fan of other DJs, and a student of the craft.

“Spinning is therapy for me. It’s all for the love of good music, good people and good energy. I just love playing music for people, that’s it. The satisfaction of moving a crowd with music is incomparable. That’s why I don’t have planned sets. I just wing it every time and just play with the vibe of the people.” – Switch

DJ MIKECONS

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Mike Constantino heads BBC (Big Ben Collective) Manila. Known for its high-end, style-with-substance productions, BBC was responsible for the proliferation of quality Downtempo/Lounge music in the local scene. Bringing in fresh concepts and artists like Hotel Costes, Buddha Bar, Nirvana Lounge, jojoflores’ Therapy, Heavy Boogie, Treva Whateva (Ninja Tune), DJ Andy Smith (Dynamo Productions), DJ Moni Pineda (ubiquita NYC), Nostalgia77 (Ubiquity Records), Shawn Tulsi (Cafe Del Mar, Singapore), DJ Kero One (Plug Label) among many others, the Collective is Manila’s foremost authority in tasteful, good-vibed music.

As a musician, Mike was a member of Soul A Capella pioneers, ReVerse, when it spread its unique blend of voices back in the early 90s. To help nurture budding artists in their university, he and members of ReVerse and sister band SAM, founded back in 1996 what is now called the Ateneo Musicians Pool. After ReVerse’s stint as finalists in the 1998 Metropop Songfest, he went on to play drums for the accompanied reincarnation of ReVerse (Release) from ‘98 until 2000. Mike was also part of the original team of MYX Philippines, he went on to head Marketing for the channel, helping propel it to number 1.

Mikecons started his love affair with Dance and Electronic Music as the electronic percussionist for Percussive House outfit, Latin Canteen back in 2001. Always just behind the scenes, he now shares his taste and soul to open-eared listeners this side of the world and beyond. A self-confessed and proud herald of the Digital front of music, he was one of the early proponents of the use of electronic means to get the music across and is now one of the Philippine endorsers of M-Audio’s Torq/Conectiv DJ Software.

As the main face and sound of BBC, Mikecons lends his FunkSoulOthers sets to the scene as a Digital Musician.

He currently shares his love for Soul Music as vocalist for the band, Mike’s Apartment. Mike’s Apartment has released their much-anticipated debut LP, Lovers/Quarrel last September 27, 2008 under his independent record label, Respeto Music. Lovers/Quarrel is available in all Music One and Fully Booked branches.
