VANS CA AT 120 PEREA

Monday, September 6th, 2010

It was on March 1966 when Steve Van Doren manufactured the first Vans shoes in a small locally owned store in Anaheim, California known then as the Van Doren Rubber Company. They sold 12 pairs on the same day, in what is now known as the Authentics.

From then on out, time and time again, Vans has proven that it is not only here to stay but remains as a force to be reckoned with.

From Cali to MNL, below are the new drops from Vans at 120 PEREA….

VANS ERA WINGTIP CA (cement/marshmallow canvas/suede)
Vans #95 now known as the Era, designed by Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta mashed-up with wingtips from the Rat Pack. Classic.

VANS ZAPATO DEL BARCO CA (black nubuck)
Vans’ interpretation of the boat shoe has been killing it….cause it works all the time. Enough said.

VANS HALF CAB PRO (Black/ Supertuff Suede)
The Vans Half Cab was Steve Caballero’s second signature shoe from Vans in 1991. After he’d see skaters cut his first signature shoe in half to make it a mid top sneaker instead, he decided to try it out, pitched it to Vans, leading to the Vans Style 33, or the Half Cab. The Caballero patch was replaced with the words Half Cab and a picture of Steve performing the half cab. A piece of history in one iconic shoe, eh.

VANS x STUSSY Bailie (vintage brown leather/orange)
Laid-back, casual vintage and simplified. For the ladies.

CONVERSATIONS WITH TODD SHIMABUKU OF IN4MATION

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

We decided to chat Todd up and he IN4MED us how IN4M came about.

When and how did In4mation start?
In4mation was started out as a retail storefront in 2002 aiming to bring the different brands and cultures to the Hawaiian islands.

What was the concept behind In4mation?
Our concept was for the 4 partners to stand as one and move forward into the marketplace of Apparel and Design.  With our own original stores and brand, we envisioned to one day break into the marketplace and to always try and be original with our designs for our wholesale and retail.

Describe the typical In4mant?
A person that is a team player and takes care of everyone in the team, looking over everyone’s moves and making sure we are in the right place at the right time.

What are your best collaborations to date?
Our Vans Half Cabs are my favorite as well as the Skateboard Mag Cruiser we did for the Grind 4 Life benefit.

Drop by Commune MNL for some 808 love from In4mation!

We shall proceed and continue,
COMMUNE MNL

NICK AUTOMATIC POP-UP RECAP

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

So here’s how Nick Automatic and Commune MNL did it. 3 people at a time were allowed to check out the pop-up store. Yes, 3 people at a time, for 5 minutes…..So. 3 lines. 3 people at a time. 5 minutes….

This picture was taken before the whole thing started….

This picture was taken around halfway through….around 2 hours after….

Check out the rest of the pictures at our gallery page here. We will let the event speak for itself….although we are tempted right now to provide you with some witty hyperboles, metaphors and similes regarding the amount of people who showed up that day…since 10am. For now, we will let the pictures do the talking.

Thank you very much to all those who came through! Your patience is greatly appreciated. Salamat!

Mad props to Nicolo, Niche, Ej and the rest of the crew!!

One thing…did we mention this was gonna be huge?

Best believe,

Commune MNL

CONVERSATIONS WITH RAY MATE OF MIGHTY HEALTHY

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

When we started Commune MNL, we were only sure of one thing – we had to start from the ground up and learn how to DO YOU.

That’s why when choosing brands to carry for the store, we had to pick those that shared the same philosophies and those that inspired us to share that PROGRESSIVE “hustle-till-I-die” mindset.

We caught up with Ray Mate, co-founder of MIGHTY HEALTHY (who’s Filipino, by the way) to chat him up about everyday things — from design inspirations to progressive philosophies and everything in between. You’ll know he’s got CRAZY STEEZ, yo!

Ray Mate on the right with his brother Rob at the store.

What’s Up?

Not much just getting ready to start my day.

What does Mighty Healthy mean?
We actually got the name from a Ghostface song…I know everyone loves to refer to Wu Tang

How did you start?
I was doing designs for Poets and Denis invited me to start MH with him. I didn’t know how much work it was going to be creating a brand or how much work it was going to be. I had a day job and did MH on the side for many years. I took my 401K and cashed it out. I was all in from there.

How do you keep your brand going strong and distinct from all the other brands?

We do what we like..a lot of the stuff we do people don’t understand and some don’t. We’re okay with it. I think MH has its own steez.

What’s the most significant design you’ve come up with?

Hmmm…we make a lot of tees. Maybe the Mad People in New York Are Hustlers tee.

What new thing/idea does the current market/culture/scene need to progress?
Let’s all work together and take this shit over. So much talent out so many egos.

What are your current design inspirations?

Filipino food.

What are your thoughts for a young market like Manila?
Keep it fun. Filipinos know the deal! Always have fun and smile..that’s my motto

How’s the NYC scene?

Like High School…you got heads that think they’re better than everyone else. Get the fuck outta here. We all work you are not doing anything special.

How does the everyday city life translate into your designs?
Hustle all day. I try my best to keep it moving and have our designs reflect us as a brand. I think Denis and I do a good job of expressing that with our graphics.

Check the goods from MIGHTY HEALTHY, that already dropped/ will be dropping at 120 Perea. Watch out!

Let’s all work together and take this shit over – Ray,
